Mandisa's journey as a natural hair culturist began in 1998 with her personal decision to "go natural".

In 2000, as an apprentice for Jamal West, founder of Why Knot Concept Salon in Chicago, Mandisa received the gift and foundation of natural hair. The owner of Why Knot, Kenyatta Mitchell, trained her in the art of Interlatch weaving. Mandisa learned basic braiding techniques from Wynetta Hughes @ Malcolm X College. In March 2003, she successfully completed Taliah Waajid's Natural Hair Braiding, and Weaving Seminar where she trained hands-on in 24 advanced braiding and weaving techniques. She currently specializes in Interlatch, Locs, Healthy Natural Hair and Scalp Care.

Mandisa is the former owner of Evolutions Hair Studio in Chicago. After closing her salon in 2005 and making another brief stop at Why Knot she decided, upon the urging of many people who believe in her talents and gifts, to take her skills on the road.

For her personal satisfaction, in May 2007, Mandisa completed her B.A. in Organizational Management @ Concordia University Chicago as a Summa Cum Laude graduate. She is currently enrolled in Northwestern University in a Master of Science Program.
